<p>While the crisis in Ukraine roils global equity and digital asset markets, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are increasingly seen as risk assets in the eyes of institutional traders.</p>



<p>Recent shocks have <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/bitcoins-plunge-on-ukraine-invasion-undermines-status-as-digital-gold/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hindered the premise</a> of bitcoin as digital gold, or a store of value — its standing as a bellwether investment in times of turmoil has likewise been called into question.</p>



<p>Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, including ether, plunged more than 10% Thursday as the Russian incursion into Ukraine started, before bouncing back to book modest gains on the day. Digital assets also continued to rise Friday as traders appeared to shake off the impact of medium- and longer-term implications of the invasion.</p>



<p>Kevin Kang, co-founder of digital asset hedge fund firm BKCoin Capital, attributed the recovery to “short covering and equities recovering earlier losses.”</p>



<p>Indeed, bitcoin has traded in near tandem with stocks as of late. Wary of the correlation, big-time traders have largely stayed on the sidelines of the latest market moves, according to Rance Masheck, CEO of trading platform <a href="https://www.ivestplus.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">iVest Plus</a>.</p>



<p>“Overall, [crypto] moved with the way the US market moved,” Masheck said. “Some of it came back, just like the market came back, but the big players aren’t jumping in or bailing out.”</p>



<p>iVest data show a decline of about 50% in bitcoin trades over $100,000 from the same time last week — plus, the firm recorded a net outflow of a modest $19 million, indicating few directional bets.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Bitcoin was up 9.6% in the last 24 hours as of midday Friday, while showing a weekly decline of -2.9%. Ether, meanwhile, increased 10.7% in the last day, paring week-long losses to -5.6%.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Volatility shows few signs of slowing.</p>



<p>“Historically, the day of the invasion marked a local bottom in the market as uncertainty dissipates, but there are a lot of talks about how Russia may be just starting and may go into Poland and other near NATO nations, which will put the US in a limbo,” Kang said. “There are still a lot of uncertainties in the market. We expect the volatility to continue.”&nbsp;</p>



<p>Brian Brooks, CEO of bitcoin mining and crypto technology company Bitfury, said bitcoin is trading as it should in a risk-off environment where investors “are going to retreat to Treasurys and cash for a short period of time.”</p>



<p>Other macro factors are at play behind recent market volatility, too, he said — including looming tax bills on the horizon that traders may not have budgeted for. A recent drying up of liquidity hasn’t necessarily helped matters either.</p>



<p>“Even though bitcoin in part has an element of store of value to it, it’s still thinly traded enough that it’s acting more like a risk asset,” Brooks said. “Other than bitcoin, the right way to think about crypto tokens is they’re risky internet stocks — and internet stocks are way down.”</p>



<p>Meanwhile, the growing prospect of rising interest rates in the US — expected as a means to tamp down runaway inflation — is likewise weighing on crypto markets, according to David Tawil, president of cryptocurrency hedge fund firm ProChain Capital. Ongoing supply chain jams are also roiling traditional financial instruments and digital assets, Tawil said.</p>



<p>“Clearly, the downdraft in the asset class has been because the dominant feature has been, essentially, a growth-tech story, a risk-on asset,” Tawil said. “Therefore, when we get into a risk-off environment, it’s going to trade down, including inflation, rising rates and now geopolitical instability.”</p>



<p>The Ukraine tensions also raise the possibility of sanctioned Russian oligarchs turning to crypto to transfer money as banks have cut them off, Masheck said — as well as the government itself tapping digital assets to circumvent traditional finance. It heightens the prospect of US regulators taking a faster pace as both Ukraine and <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/as-russia-tests-digital-ruble-plans-for-broader-crypto-regulation-are-uncertain/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Russia</a> have moved to legalize and regulate the space.</p>



<p>“Obviously, those sanctions will have some level of impact, but crypto allows for a little bit of a circumvention of some of that,” he said.</p>



<p>Masheck and Brooks both expect bitcoin to behave less like a risk asset and lose its correlation to stocks as the asset evolves.</p>



<p>“As we move forward here, I think we’ll start to see more of a divergence between what US markets are doing and what’s happening in crypto,” Masheck said.</p>

<p>ETH issuance continues to decline thanks to the upgrade EIP-1559 that was implemented in August, causing the base fee when transacting on the Ethereum network to be burned. This makes ETH less inflationary. </p>



<p>Many investors anticipate the ETH issuance to become deflationary when <a href="https://ethereum.org/en/eth2/merge/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the merge</a> completes in the first half of next year, which will mark the end of proof-of-work for the Ethereum network as it completes its transition to proof-of-stake.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">ETH holders are all in profit</h3>



<p>Another catalyst for ETH going forward could be increased institutional adoption. Currently, a vast majority of open interest in the futures market and investment-grade products revolve around BTC. With ETH micro futures launching on the CME on <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/cryptocurrencies/ether/micro-ether.html?redirect=/microether#" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">December 6th</a> and many <a href="https://twitter.com/JSeyff/status/1455528910804946947?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">analysts expecting</a> the approval of a futures-backed Ethereum ETF over the coming months, a flood of capital waiting on the sidelines may pour in.</p>



<p>The percentage of ETH holders that are in a state of profit is hovering near all-time highs, practically at 100% as the triple point asset remains in price discovery. It turns out there has never been a bad day to buy ETH since its initial coin offering in <a href="https://www.gemini.com/cryptopedia/initial-coin-offering-explained-ethereum-ico" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2014</a>. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Bitcoin</strong> supply distribution</h3>



<p><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-10-25/bitcoin-still-concentrated-in-few-hands-study-finds" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Critics</a> often times like to use the data publicly available to claim that the BTC supply is concentrated and is therefore not adequately decentralized money.</p>



<p>At first glance of the on-chain data, this would appear correct. &#8220;18.7M of 18.9M total bitcoins are held by the top 10% of bitcoin addresses while 17.3M are held by the top 1% of addresses. But this is very misleading when taken at face value as many of the largest addresses are entities holding bitcoin on behalf of thousands, if not millions, of individuals,&#8221; a Coin Metrics <a href="https://coinmetrics.substack.com/p/coin-metrics-state-of-the-network-issue-127" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> said.  </p>



<p>When looking at the balance of BTC on exchanges from <a href="https://studio.glassnode.com/metrics?a=BTC&amp;category=Exchanges&amp;m=distribution.BalanceExchanges" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glassnode</a>, there are roughly 2.475 million BTC, or approximately 13% of the circulating supply, held in their wallets. This would lead someone looking at the on-chain data to believe that the supply is being held by an individual, when in all reality that is not the case.</p>

<p>There is also a large number of BTC being held on behalf of Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) investors, resulting in a large concentration of the supply being held in a small number of wallet addresses. </p>



<p>Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is another black hole for BTC supply that could be deceiving at first glance. </p>



<p>The Coin Metrics report continued, &#8220;225K BTC is &#8216;wrapped&#8217; as a token (WBTC) that can be used within the Ethereum ecosystem. WBTC tokens are backed 1:1 and redeemable for the underlying BTC. The BTC is effectively held in custody by a few addresses that appear like large holders when in reality 41K Ethereum addresses have a positive balance of WBTC.&#8221;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">FAANG outstanding shares supply concentration</h3>



<p>It is also worth noting that many traditional financial instruments appear to have a high concentration of supply held by a select few entities, but a little bit of due diligence will quickly uncover that it is far from the truth. </p>



<p>The percentage of FAANG stocks held by top institutions would be alarming to those who don&#8217;t understand that millions of investors gain exposure to their holdings through various investment products such as ETFs. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Bitcoin ETF updates</h3>



<p>The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) moved back the deadline to make a decision on the proposed Valkyrie Bitcoin Fund by 60 days (from Nov. 8 to Jan. 7, 2022), according to <a href="https://www.sec.gov/rules/sro/nysearca/2021/34-93489.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">a disclosure</a> published on Monday.</p>



<p>The differentiating factor between Valkyrie&#8217;s proposed ETF would be that it holds spot BTC as opposed to currently listed, <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/bito-on-track-to-be-first-fund-in-history-to-hit-1b-in-aum-in-two-days/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BITO</a>, which is backed by futures contracts traded on the CME. </p>



<p>“We believe this a positive step because it means the agency is taking the time to deliberate and wholly consider the merits of such a product coming to the market,” Leah Wald, CEO of Valkyrie Funds, told Blockworks. “Given this expanded window, we are eager to use this as an opportunity to further collaborate with the regulator to help alleviate any concerns they may have and hopefully realize a positive outcome sometime next year.”</p>



<p>The postponement comes about two weeks before competing fund manager VanEck’s proposed physically backed bitcoin ETF <a href="https://cms.blockworks.co/vaneck-ceo-hopes-sec-will-make-that-leap-in-approving-its-bitcoin-etfs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reaches its last deadline</a> — meaning the SEC cannot again delay its decision — on Nov. 14.</p>
